POINTE DU CHÊNE RECREATION AND COMMUNITY CENTER
Donald 'Snooky' Lutes

Donald 'Snooky' Lutes was born and raised in Pointe du Chêne, in the house right across the street from the community center playground.  He was the son of Anna Hebert and George Lutes.  Snooky loved to play hockey and baseball, liked to hunt and fish and go swimming at the shore. He was a handsome, self-confident, smart young man who loved to read.  Snooky enlisted in the army when war broke out in Europe.  On the 12th of November 1944, he arrived in England, he was 19 years old.  He was than deployed to Continental Europe on the 18th of November.  On the 24th of November, Snooky arrived at his unit, the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders, and was taken on strength the following day.  On the 26th of November, 'A company' reports that Pte Lutes was killed in action from enemy mortar fire in or around the area of Mook, Netherlands. This incident occurred only one day after joining his unit! Snooky is buried at Groesbeck Canadian War Cemetery in Holland.

There were many dozens of brave men from the Pointe who volunteered and served in World War II, but Snooky was the only one who did not come home!  His sacrifice for his community and country should not be forgotten.
